We asked you to vote for your favourite question out of three:

  1. How often should moisturisers be used to keep eczema under control between flare-ups?
  2. Can using a steroid cream for longer during a flare-up help keep eczema clear for longer?
  3. If flare-ups keep happening, can using a milder steroid cream twice a week between flare-ups help keep eczema under control?

The winner is Question 2:

“Can using a steroid cream for longer during a flare-up help keep eczema clear for longer?”

As you’ll see in the table below, Question 3 got the most votes. Our coproduction group discussed the results in detail. This group includes 14 people with eczema. It also includes a smaller number of healthcare professionals and researchers.

They agreed that Question 3 is very important but decided that it is not suitable for an online study like Rapid. This is because people would have to use steroid creams in a way that their doctor hasn’t recommended. And also because the Rapid online trials don’t involve check-ups with doctors.

We are looking into other ways that we can work on Question 3. Using a steroid cream twice a week in this way is called ‘Weekend Therapy’. Keep an eye on our newsletters for a blog on this topic coming soon.

The votes from the survey are shown below. We had 333 responses, including 273 from adults and 56 from parents of children with eczema. Most of the people who answered were women (71%), and most people were between 26 to 59 years old (45%).

Q1: How often should moisturiser be used to keep eczema under control between flare-ups? 94 votes 28.7%
Q2: Can using a steroid cream for longer during a flare-up help keep eczema clear for longer? 87 votes 26.5%
Q3: If flare-ups keep happening, can using a milder steroid cream twice a week between flare-ups help keep eczema under control? 147 votes 44.8%

Because we couldn’t go ahead with Question 3, we looked at second-choice votes. We counted the second-choice votes of the people who had voted for Question 3 and added these to the first-choice votes. This resulted in the votes shown in the table below:

Q1: How often should moisturiser be used to keep eczema under control between flare-ups? 150 votes 46.6%
Q2: Can using a steroid cream for longer during a flare-up help keep eczema clear for longer? 172 votes 53.4%

This means that of the questions that it is possible to answer as an online trial, the most popular question was:

“Can using a steroid cream for longer during a flare-up help keep eczema clear for longer?”

Thank you again for voting. Our coproduction group will now design a clinical trial that can answer this question. This trial will be our second Rapid Eczema Trial.
