Do you have eczema and want to reduce scratching? If so this study is for you!

We are looking for children aged 8 – 12 years with eczema to take part in a study lasting 4 months. The study will test if following a 3-part online programme can help people manage their scratching and improve their eczema.

What is the itch-scratch cycle?

Eczema can make your skin feel itchy. Scratching or rubbing the skin can provide relief, but this can make the itching worse. The more you scratch, the more it itches, and the worse the eczema gets. This is called the “itch-scratch cycle”.

Finding ways of reducing scratching may help to improve the eczema, alongside using your usual eczema treatments.

We are looking for children aged 8 – 12 years who have eczema and would like to reduce their scratching.

If they agree to take part in the study, we will put them into one of two groups:

Access to the Scratch Less programme, plus usual eczema care: Scratch Less is a newly developed 3-part online programme to help manage itching and scratching for people with eczema. It is simple to use and can be completed at your own pace. You should also carry on with your usual eczema treatments.

Usual eczema care: people in this group will continue managing their eczema as usual during the 4-month study. You should carry on with your usual eczema treatments.

We don’t yet know if the Scratch Less programme works – that’s why we are doing the study.  People in the usual eczema care group will be able to try it for themselves at the end of the study if they would like to.

Video explaining what’s involved if you take part in the trial:

Your child will not be able to choose which group they are in. This will be done randomly to make sure our study is a fair test.

They will be in the study for 4 months

They will be asked to answer questions online about their eczema every month.

They can continue using their usual eczema treatments during the study.

Before signing up, they will be asked a few simple questions to see if this study is right for them.

By taking part in this study, you will be helping many more people to understand how to take better care of their eczema.
